This is a California Buckeye.

Aesculus_californica-29.jpg

Fun Fact: The Indians used the seeds to fish because of the toxin called aesculin so the fish would stop breathing so the fish would bob to the surface so the fish could be easily caught by hand.

This is the CA Buckeye seed.

A CA Buckeye tree has brown bark covered by lichen. The flowers on the CA Buckeye leaves grow into scrub bushes. The CA Buckeye has a round top of leaves.

The habitat for the CA Buckeye is on woodlands, hillsides and espesially stream banks.

The only edible part of the CA Buckeye tree is the seeds. The seeds are only edible when you have rinsed and leached them.

The smashed seeds were used for a hemorroid remedy. The bark can heal (help) toothaches.

INTERESTING FACTS: The seed looks like a deer's eye. The CA Buckeye is one of the first trees to leaf out in Autumn. The seed has a toxin call aesculin.
